– Animation THE BUZZ: The Smurfs get a soft reboot after experiencing a case of sequelitis back in 2013, when The Smurfs 2 made half as much money as the 2011 hit. Maybe it’s just our age, but this particular adventure seems to have an Amblin Entertainment feel to it, which might make for a welcome surprise for parents.

– Comedy THE BUZZ: If you’ve ever watched “Scrubs” (and if you haven’t, you need to get on that, stat), you’ve doubtless come to appreciate the winsome and totally not intimidating comedic instincts of Zach Braff. And if you’ve ever followed his exploits further, you’ll remember the charming, thoughtful, delicious work he did in helming 2000’s Garden State. Which is why I am (and you should be) excited by his latest project, a remake of a ’70s-era gem of a heist comedy. In the 2017 version, Braff leads a venerable triumvirate of Oscar-winning acting legends, who play a trio of retirees afflicted with more-than-a-pill-bottle’s-worth of crust … and bad judgment. – Bret

– Action THE BUZZ: Anne Hathaway is figuratively huge in South Korea in Nacho Vigalondo’s bonkers-sounding sci-fi comedy that’s received heaps of praise for its originality, daring, and ability to stick the landing. I have a feeling people will be talking about this movie well into the summer, and hope it makes certain audiences reconsider Hathaway’s appeal. – Arno

THE BUZZ: What we love about Susan Glatzer’s documentary: It doesn’t seem as concerned with emphasizing swing-dance culture’s relevance years after its late 90s revival; instead, it spotlights a series of individuals whose lives have been positively affected by moving their bodies to this particular beat.

THE BUZZ: The new movie from director Danièle Thompson (Avenue Montaigne) was on the Best Foreign Language Oscar shortlist but lost its spot to Elle, but the thought of Guillaume Canet (we still love Tell No One) and Guillaume Gallienne (who really won us over as Pierre Bergé in Yves Saint Laurent) could keep art-house theaters full for a couple months.

THE BUZZ: Chris Evans’ desire to make hard-hitting dramas outside of the MCU continues with this Marc Webb-directed take on the matter of single parenting. The Black List script by Tom Flynn was performed in 2015 at a relatively new live-reading event that celebrates these as-yet-unproduced scripts on the stage in an attempt to get more momentum behind them.

THE BUZZ: Years ago I argued with an acquaintance about Cristian Mungiu’s 4 Months 3 Weeks and 2 Days to the point where we still don’t talk much. I believe that Mungiu is a masterful director who has rallied a band of post-Communist filmmakers around Eastern Europe and his storytelling messages are often more optimistic than they might appear on first viewing. Scratching Graduation’s surface, the story is about the lengths a father goes to to help his university-bound daughter get out of Romania for a better life in the UK, and there’s plenty of critical argument around whether the tale is just brutal or more brutally honest, with a nod to the current and future generations of Romanians to smash the state.

THE BUZZ: Lone Scherfig (An Education) is back with a war drama that has a bit more grit under its nails than you might expect from a crowd-pleaser, as well as a true-to-life look at how movie effects were created in the early days. Quite simply, it’s a movie for film-lovers.
