What if you could plop a strange orb of water into your mouth instead of keeping a water bottle on deck? That’s the goal of Skipping Rocks Lab, a London startup seeking to prevent 1 billion water bottles from reaching the ocean each year.
Their product has a name appropriate for the delight of its novelty: ooho!
The ooho! is a ball of water surrounded by a biodegradable, edible membrane made of seaweed extract. You can tear it open and pour it in your mouth or simply eat the whole thing.
Skipping Rocks Lab first made headlines with the prototype back in 2014 and went on to sell it at pop-ups. Now it’s on track to take the ooho! to a much bigger scale, as it successfully crowd funded the $500,000 it sought on crowdcube.
Already at $750,000, the money raised will enable Skipping Rocks to make its product more widely available with a commercial lease, development of a retail machine, and booking more than 18 events in 2018.
Skipping Rocks was founded by RCA and a group of engineers from Imperial College London. Their product, which they’ve been developing for two years, is cheaper than plastic and can also be used for soft drinks, alcohol, and cosmetics. The membrane can even be flavored and colored.
