I write in deep regret and the inhuman attitude shown to me at the University Hospital, Staff village – Legon. “I NEARLY LOST MY LIFE”. It can happen to anyone in such critical condition of which I went through.
What is the use of Identity cards when its no use for its intended purpose. Am highly disappointed at the service the University Hospital subjected me to.
On 2nd July,2016 ,I was rushed to the University Hospital Legon in the early hours of 9.When we got there, no usual magnanimous queue at the place.Quickly my friends rushed to get the nurse available to help me out “at least a first aid” but to no avail.
They were told to visit the so called staff or national service personnel who sat in that air-condition record room to get my hospital card.
Unfortunately my National health insurance card was not with me,a card that had made massive attention in the public domain between the EC – Judiciary matter, but, I had an old card during my undergraduate level which even showed I had visited the clinic before. So I told my friends to show them the national service card to my amazement, one of the male staff told us to go back and bring a letter showing am a service personnel in the University amidst the situation. “What?!”
“What’s the use of the NSS card?”
If serving your country is compulsory why then do they not respect the NSS card, not alone doing your service in the said institutions?
Put yourself in a situation where you have been posted to a new destination away from your home for National Service and such “tragedy” has “befall” you literally?
“What can that GHc350 service allowance do when you’ve paid your rent and huge utility bill with that amount?”
“It’s just unfortunate!”
How many people have died from such unfair process in such conditions in public hospital? How many less privileged people have been subjected to this embarrassing situation and we call our nation middle income country?
Our health sector must be serious.
I now understand what that old lady said at the entrance at the University of Ghana Hospital Staff Village,”they see more death ,so what can they do” shocking!
“What sort of service is this”.
I hesitantly contacted a man who works at the hospital just to even clarify that,am a service personnel in the University but those official insisted but thus the hospital policy.”ei saaa!” while I sat there unattended to this man explained to them that we were even there for a cleanup exercise on the 1st July and even coordinated the activities.
“Is this how we must leave in Ghana , to whom you know?” Before they told my friend to take my details.
My hands become soo dry, felt soo restless, my feet become very heavy which I barely walked. The annoying part was, this same young staff member was part of the staff games which we all participated together at athletes oval which of course he might challenge that he didn’t participate or the entire hospital team didn’t take part which I will “understand”.
“He didn’t noticed me!.. even with that, should that be the case if you want to save a life?”
Quickly they gave my friend a piece of paper which someday would be an evidence if my lawyers give me a go ahead to sue the hospital.I hesitantly allowed my friend to contact my family far away and my mother insisted I went to the private hospital for treatment.
We got unto a taxi away to the private hospital with the blowing horn as we meandered amongst the vehicles on our way to the private hospital. We payed, I waited too , but I was taken care of.
“If I had no money on me, what would have happened?”
“If I had no friends to send me to the hospital where would I have been?”
“If I judiciously served my country and such unfair treatment is given to me, then what would an ordinary less privileged Ghanaian do in such horrifying experience?”
When we lay down our tools when we are not paid and go ahead to threaten government with lives and such are resolved, yet we still acting this way, what’s the difference – strike action!?
“Is it attitude or the unavailability of resources, I guess not resources! Is the attitude of these people!”
This horrifying experience can kill potential doctors, future lawyers, bankers and even future Presidents.
“Am highly disappointed! Unfair treatment to humanity”.
“Change your attitude!”
Who queries such people?
Authorities?
Or they are just following their others from their superiors?
I can now say from this horrifying experience that, alot of people may have lots their lives just through such ill attitude , service or call it “am following orders”.
We openly condemn that corrupt government officials, that security personnel who fails to do his or her work, that teacher or lawyer because of their attitude and we hide without saying anything to these people whose jobs are very crucial and they wake up on Fridays and go to mosque and pray, or Saturday or Sunday to Church and pray, or even the shrine to “jujudaise” people!
Your maker awaits you all.
When you check the statics of death in Africa, malaria is the number one killer yet we sit back and claim it’s education and campaign, sleeping under treated mosquito nets that will solve the issue. Yes, it can help but, what about that baby or young girl or man who has been rushed to the hospital showing signs of these illness? what emergency treatment can be given to such victims when they are rushed to the hospital?
I leave that to the wise to take that up.We need to be serious in everything in this country.
I slept outside the hospital ward in that private hospital which of course I don’t blame them, but how they quickly came to my aid in that apathy, well,I will cover that in the next episode. They sure stabilised my condition.
We have literally lived with malaria and we feel is “normal” and look unconcerned. Wait when you metaphorically huts you on your bed with such threatening symptoms, then you will feel there is a “shady” hospital down the road.
Let me use this opportunity to advise all Ghanaian and even the world, “stress can kill, malaria kills, so go for treatment or check ups as soon as possible. Beware! , Whats the use of an NSS card if it’s unable to provide the necessary assistance one needs at a crucial moment.
Let me use this piece to suggest that, the National Service personnel enrolled should be on insurance because any unforeseen circumstances can happen at anytime – God forbid!
Secondly the card should be made available early so that bearers can be given such treatment when they encounter such challenge.
Finally, the national service allowance should be increased, for such GHc350 is not enough when you rent a room, pay for utility bill, just to mention but a few.
University Hospital,Legon – all eyes are watching you!!
