Respect your leader – Prof. Gyampo tells NDC executives

A lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Legon, has advised executives and supporters of the opposition National Democratic congress (NDC) to give the maximum respect to founder of its party, former President Jerry John Rawlings.

According to Professor Ransford Gyampo, despite the criticism by the former statesman, the party must give the necessary respect to the originator of its party.

“NDC must respect Rawlings whiles Rawlings must also respect the party he founded, Prof. Gyampo who is also a Fellow at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) was speaking Monday on Adom FM’s “Burning Issues” programme with Afia Pokua.

His comment follows statement by the founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Jerry John Rawlings who said Ghanaians booted the NDC out of office because of sickening greed, selfishness and corruption.

According to him, such practices were contrary to the values upheld by the NDC, describing them as a “betrayal of the values of June 4,” which are probity, transparency and accountability.

Former President Rawlings made the remark when he was addressing NDC members in Wa in the Upper West Region on Sunday to mark the 38th-anniversary of June 4 revolution.

Rawlings said the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Jerry John Rawlings, needs a complete overhaul of his party.

But the Central Regional Chairman of National Democratic Congress (NDC) Allotey Jacobs said Rawlings cannot take control the party as it was sometime back, he claimed the party has outgrown the Rawlings’ so it is about time that the former president realizes that.

Responding to the comments and criticisms by some NDC party officials, Prof. Gyampo called for cool heads as the party undergoes restructuring after the 2016 elections defeat.

Rawlings must also play his role as a founder by addressing issues of concern in camera and assist the party as expected by the executives and supporters.
