Ghanaians will miss Jon Benjamin – Akufo-Addo

Outgoing British High Commissioner to Ghana, Jon Benjamin will be sorely missed by Ghanaians, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said.

According to Mr. Akufo-Addo, the controversial diplomat’s interest in the country’s politics and social life has earned him a special place in the heart of Ghanaians, adding that he is welcome to the country anytime he so desires.

The President made the comments when the outgoing Commissioner paid a farewell courtesy call on him at the Flagstaff House Tuesday afternoon.

President Akufo-Addo urged Mr. Benjamin to keep the interest of Ghana high as he brings his duty in the West African country to a close and moves on to other assignments.

The President added that the relationship between Ghana and the United Kingdom has greatly deepened during his period of stay in Ghana and was hopeful that whoever takes his place will further enrich the good relations between the two countries.

In a response, Mr. Benjamin described his departure as a very sad moment. According to him, his stay in Ghana has been extremely special.

He was hopeful that his successor will deepen the relationship between Ghana and the UK than what has existed during his time.

“My extensive travel in Ghana has made me experience firsthand the culture and social values of the People of Ghana,” he added.

Ian Walker takes over from Benjamin in August 2017.
