Gov’t sponsoring Israel trip bad precedent – Woyome

A ranking member for the Youth, Sport and Culture committee of Parliament, Hon. Kwabena Mensah Woyome has said government’s initiative to facilitate some pilgrims embark on a trip to Israel and the Vatican City should be based on equity.
“If the ministry would want to embark on this exercise, then there is the need [for] equity,” Hon. Woyome told Morning Starr host Francis Abban.
The move by government to send over 100 persons to some holy cities has been described by the majority of the public as a misplaced priority on the part of government.
Hon. Woyome told Morning Starr that the government was setting a dangerous precedent since it may not be able to support religious organization who might want to embark on a similar religious trip.

The Member of Parliament for South Tongu added “apart from Christians we have other religions like the Eckankar and all the others, [if] they come and they want to embark on such journeys, would the ministry be ready because of what they are doing now and go ahead and fund those journeys as well?,” Hon. Woyome queried.
He added they have written to the ministry to come and explain into detail how the ministry intends to facilitate the pilgrimage to the holy cities.
He stressed that he agrees with the submission of the Chairman of the Church of Pentecost Apostle Dr. Opoku Onyinah who described government’s decision as needless.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Kofi Dzamesi will be in parliament today to answer questions over the Christian pilgrimage to Israel.
