FROM CRISTIANO RONALDO’S MANCHESTER UNITED RETURN RUMORS TO CHELSEA SIGNING NO ONE: PREMIER LEAGUE TRANSFER RECAP

This was the week in transfers where everything should have happened, and almost nothing actually did.

Cristiano Ronaldo blew up the Internet with the revelation that he was unhappy at Real Madrid and was seeking a way out.
Two and two immediately made five, linking Ronaldo with a return to Manchester United that really makes no sense at all, despite sounding lovely.
Here are the rest of the biggest rumors and reports from a week that promised craziness and delivered Mohamed Salah in exchange for a lot of money.

Monday

Chelsea was seeking to wrap up deals for defender Alex Sandro and midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, according to reports.

By the end of the week, Chelsea’s ‘in’ column remains devoid of names—a potentially worrying situation for the Premier League champion as it seeks to retain its crown next season.

Mohamed Salah was a target for Liverpool, and by the end of the week manager Jurgen Klopp had wrapped up a £36.9 million deal for the Egypt winger who signed from A.S. Roma.

Tuesday

News—or rumors—of Jose Mourinho’s supposed pursuit of Ronaldo dominated the transfer headlines on Tuesday. Ronaldo wanted to leave Real Madrid although it may all have been an unsubtle ruse to make Real love him more. It’s happened before.

Elsewhere in Manchester, Pep Guardiola was supposed to be looking at signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for Manchester City.

Aubameyang, the Gabon striker, is a player constantly linked with moves away from Borussia Dortmund, only they never seem to actually happen. This one didn’t, either, but there is time.

Wednesday

Is Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s next stop Major League Soccer?

The Sweden striker was exceptional for Manchester United last season, scoring 28 goals in all competitions, and Wednesday’s newspapers reckoned he was off across the Atlantic once he recovers from a knee injury sustained in the spring.

Dani Alves was on the verge of joining Manchester City—and who doesn’t want to see the Brazilian right back in the Premier League? And in one of the summer’s more bizarre rumors so far, Adama Traore—the Middlesbrough winger who was entirely unmemorable last season—was of interest to Conte and Chelsea.

Thursday

John Terry—he of the mawkish goodbyes and the questionable behavior towards his teammates’ partners—is still, when all the frippery is stripped away, a very good defender.

That’s why Championship teams are interested in the former England man, at least according to reports on Thursday. In what would be the shock of the summer—it would take some beating—Terry was reportedly being lined up by Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce to rejuvenate the East Midlands club.

Friday

Why would you want to leave Manchester United, one of the world’s biggest and most successful clubs?

Well, Matteo Darmian wants to play at the World Cup in Russia in 2018 and despite impressing at times last season he can’t be guaranteed a starting place. Friday’s gossip claimed Darmian wanted a move to Juventus so he can guarantee himself a place in the Italy squad for next summer.
