Supreme Court urged to expedite action on Bimbilla chieftaincy dispute

Stakeholders in the Nanumba North District of the Northern Region, have urged the Supreme Court to expedite action on the Bimbilla Chieftaincy dispute, which has become a major hindrance to development in the district.

The stakeholders made the appeal at a three-day district medium-term development plan review workshop in the district.

The workshop brought together all departments and developmental partners working in the district to review their activities from 2014 to 2017, the challenges and successes they chalked over the period under review and the way forward.

During the presentations by the various departments and development partners, a number of challenges were identified.

The recurring Bimbilla chieftaincy conflict was noted as the number one challenge hindering developmental activities in the district. The bad road network, sanitation and falling standard of education were some of the topmost challenges facing the district’s developmental goals. Despite these challenges, the district won an award for sanitation and was given an amount of twenty thousand pounds sterling (£20,000) to help improve the sanitation situation in the district.

On the security situation, the workshop called on the government to assist the Supreme Court to expedite action in the determination of the Bimbilla chieftaincy case which is currently before it.

It also called on the interior ministry to do something about the curfew imposed on the Bimbilla township citing how the curfew has affected lives and the socio-economic activities in the district.

The area is currently enjoying relative peace, and they made a passionate appeal for a further review of the curfew hours or a total removal as it would help in the development of the district.

In the end, the workshop was able to come out with a comprehensive medium-term development plan that would assist the district to draw it’s medium term development plan.
