Manchester United are confident of finally signing Alvaro Morata this week as has been widely reported.
The Sun claims Morata, 24, could complete his transfer on Thursday, which goes along with reports on Monday the deal could be done and dusted in 72 hours. Last week, the Spanish media predicted it would be done a lot sooner.
In May, it was revealed United had made an approach for Morata in early May and reported earlier this month that sources close to the player expected him to complete the move report the Manchester Evening News .
Last week, it was reported the Morata deal was progressing ‘slowly’ but remained on track. United are optimistic he could arrive in time to fly out to the United States with the rest of his new teammates on Sunday.
Jose Mourinho faces massive transfer challenge with his squad
A number of reports over the last couple of days have alluded to Jose Mourinho ’s frustration with the lack of new signings and our sister paper The Mirror carries the story on its back page today.
This shouldn’t surprise United supporters with long memories. Last year, it was revealed Mourinho was frustrated by United’s transfer strategy as early as mid-June and detailed how disgruntled he was at Woodward’s failure to sign Renato Sanches – a story Mourinho later confirmed.
“I got fed up and tired of football until the last day” Mourinho said last month. “I promised that you would not see me in football stadiums, and I stopped negotiating for players and being worried.
“I handed my list to the CEO in April and he has until August 31 to give me what I want, or not.”
Scrolling back through Mourinho’s press conference quotes last season, he seemed to know which players he wanted in February and he confirmed in April he hoped United would clinch their priority signings by this weekend.
“The group, next July 9, when we meet again for next season, is a strong group,” Mourinho said after the April derby. “So the new players, when they will arrive, will find a group more ready to go for big things.” Woodward has five days to sign three players (Morata, Nemanja Matic and Ivan Perisic).
Michael Keane claims he rejected United to join Everton .
“Of course it was a temptation (to join United). It’s your boyhood club,” he told Sky Sports News . “But you have got to take your heart out of it sometimes and think what’s best for you, and I feel as if this is the best place for me to come and continue my development.
“It’s a club with such big history and a great fan base so I can’t wait to pull on the shirt and play for this club.”
United were definitely interested in signing Keane but the suggestion he rejected them is a stretch. United preferred Victor Lindelof, which would have had an understandable impact on Keane, who was evidently not a priority signing.
Everton could pay up to £30m for Keane, so United could eventually pocket £7.5m after they insisted on a 25 per cent sell-on clause be written into Keane’s Burnley contract.
Alvaro Morata’s transfer to Manchester United could be sealed this week
Wayne Rooney could join Everton, according to TalkSport . The Toffees have barely concealed their interest in Rooney and, should he take a pay cut, a return to his boyhood club poses one last great challenge: Help them win their first trophy since 1995 and/or qualify for the Champions League.
Everton have spent over £80m already this summer, which is a serious show of intent from a club once synonymous with parsimony.
