Manchester United allow Wayne Rooney to join Everton on a free transfer – reports

MANCHESTER UNITED will allow Wayne Rooney to join Everton on a free transfer, according to reports.
Manchester United and Everton are locked in talks over deals for both Wayne Rooney and Romelu Lukaku.

The Red Devils have agreed a £75million deal with Ronald Koeman’s side for Lukaku, although Chelsea still have a chance of snapping him up.

That means that their pursuit of Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata has been called off, despite the Spaniard having his heart set on a move to Old Trafford.

Rooney, meanwhile, is closing in on a Goodison Park return 13 years after he left.
Both United and Everton have stressed that the Lukaku deal does not having a bearing on the 31-year-old’s own future.

But the Daily Mail claim that Jose Mourinho will let the veteran go for free now after talks over Lukaku proved successful.

Everton were willing to pay £10million for the player but United will waive the transfer fee so that the Toffees can offer Rooney a higher wages.

It is said that the England captain was in talks with Everton back in March once it became clear he was no longer central to Mourinho’s plans.
As well as Everton, clubs from China and the MLS have registered an interest in snapping him up.

But Rooney would instead prefer to stay in England for the sake of his family, and is reluctant to uproot his family abroad.

Rooney left Everton to join Sir Alex Ferguson’s United back in 2004 for a fee of £27million after taking the European Championships by storm.

And Michael Carrick is now in line to succeed him as United captain.
