Romelu Lukaku to Man Utd: Ed Woodward vowed to beat Chelsea to Everton star

MANCHESTER UNITED chief Ed Woodward vowed to beat Chelsea to the signing of Romelu Lukaku back in May.
Manchester United have agreed a £75million deal with Everton for Romelu Lukaku in the transfer twist of the summer so far.

The Belgium international initially looked set to join Chelsea.

But the Red Devils have now gazumped their Premier League rivals – with Lukaku set to become their second most-expensive signing of all time.

The 24-year-old will move to Old Trafford on wages of £250,000-a-week.

And Ed Woodward vowed two months ago to get the deal done.
Manchester United turned their attentions to the striker after missing out on Antoine Griezmann, who signed a new deal with Atletico Madrid.

The Red Devils CEO has been critcised in the past for failing to act swiftly enough to secure deals for the likes of Gareth Bale and Cesc Fabregas.

But he was prepared to move heaven and earth to pip Chelsea to Lukaku’s signature.

The Everton star will fill the void left by Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s departure and is now expected to lead the line next season.
United have also now dropped their interest in Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata.

The Spain international looked likely to make the move to Old Trafford but, after agreeing a fee for Lukaku, Jose Mourinho no longer wants him.

Lukaku is expected to be given the vacant No9 shirt.

But he could even get the No10 if Wayne Rooney replaces him at Goodison Park.
