MANCHESTER UNITED boss Jose Mourinho included Everton striker Romelu Lukaku on the transfer wishlist he gave to club chief Ed Woodward earlier this summer, reports claim.
Manchester United are accelerating their transfer plans as they aim to fill the void left by Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s departure.
The 35-year-old plundered home 28 goals in his debut season in England but a serious knee injury sustained in April has ended his Old Trafford career.
Express Sport understands they remain locked in talks over a deal for Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata, with Mourinho keen to reunite with the Spain international.
However, reports are now suggesting that United are likely to gazump Chelsea and seal a stunning world-record £100million move for Everton hitman Lukaku.
And the BBC say that Lukaku was on a list of targets Mourinho gave to Woodward after the club won the Europa League in May.
United have had to change tact in recent months, with Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann initially their top target.
But, with the La Liga giants banned from signing players until January, Mourinho then wanted to bring Lukaku to Old Trafford.
Chelsea have long been expected to sign the Belgium international, three years after he swapped Stamford Bridge for Goodison Park in a £28m deal.
However, relations between the two teams are strained with Everton still seething at the way the Blues tried to sign John Stones two summers ago.
Lukaku, speaking about his future last month, admitted that staying with the Toffees was not an option because he wants to win major trophies.
“Staying at Everton is not really an option for next season,” Lukaku said.
“There is nothing concrete with another club at the moment, my agent (Mino Raiola) is busy discussing things.
“I’m not going to make big declarations about my future, but I know where I want to play: in a club who are competing in the Champions League and can win titles in England.”
Lukaku scored 25 league goals last term, just four short of Tottenham’s Harry Kane.
