NDC to select 2020 flagbearer in 2018

NDC to select 2020 flagbearer in 2018

General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress has hinted at the possible date for the selection of their flagbearer for the 2020 elections.

According to Mr. Asiedu Nketiah, the party should select their candidate for the next election two years ahead, as is stipulated in their constitution.

“By the close of next year, which is 2018, our presidential candidate for the 2020 presidential elections, would have been elected. Our Constitution instructs us to do so, and that is exactly what we will do,” he said, according to a Daily Guide report.

The party’s former flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has made no official statement about an interest in running again for the presidency, however new names have cropped up as possible candidates for the role.

Among the other names pegged to contest for the position are the former Trade and Industry Minister, Ekow Spio-Garbrah, and a former presidential staffer, Sylvester Mensah.

In 2016, the National Democratic Congress lost the elections to the New Patriotic Party, with a margin of over 1 million votes. The defeat spurred some breaks in the NDC as members began blame games on each over the true cause of their defeat.

The NDC’s leadership tasked a committee led by Prof. Kwesi Botchwey to probe the circumstances that led to the party’s loss, especially at the grassroots.

After months of investigations, a 455-paged report was presented to the party which documented the cause of their defeat, as well as suggestions to restore faith in the party.

Among the suggestions include a nationwide tour of the various NDC branches to show good faith between the leadership and the party foot soldiers, as well as to restore the integrity of their Biometric voters register.
