Former Minister’s name pops up in planted secret audiovisual device

Owners of the company that developed the audiovisual device planted in the office of the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Minister, John Peter Amewu have owned up.

One Haruna who admitted he is the technology developer, said it was a gift for the former Minister Alhajii Inusah Fuseini upon a request as part of measures to step up his personal security in the office.

He disclosed on Accra-based Starr FM, the installation of the device was not completed before the exit of the minister following the defeat of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the December 7, 2016 polls.

“It was given to him (Hon. Fuseini) as a gift so I was there to fix it for him… it wasn’t the intent or a malicious idea as people are saying to track the minister (Mr. Amewu).

“It was a private thing, it wasn’t paid by any official or any government… to my knowledge I didn’t know the device was there until yesterday,” Haruna told Morning Starr host Francis Abban.

The device was found in the office of the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources during a screening exercise in the office by National Security operatives who visited the minister’s office.

According to a Joy Fm report, it was planted in a huge coat of arms plague hanged at the far left end corner of the minister’s office.

The device has a camera, a storage unit and another believed to be a transmitter. The highly sensitive device which can even pick whisper 35-feet away was neatly housed in a black metal box and uses battery and is currently being investigated by the National Security.

Mr John Peter Amewu who confirmed the discovery, expressed surprise saying “It’s quite surprising. The device was discovered during a screening process and it is quite surprising such a device could be planted in the office.

The offices of the ministers are expected to be screened from time to time as part of security arrangements and it was one of such exercises this was found. The kind of jobs we do regarding security concerns we have to do some of these things occasionally but I would not know who planted it there”.
