Gary Neville urges Manchester United to sign £40m Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic

CHELSEA midfielder Nemanja Matic would be the perfect fit at Manchester United, according to Red Devils legend Gary Neville.
Manchester United have been heavily linked with a £40million move for Matic this summer as Chelsea look to offload the Serbia international.

Chelsea are said to be closing in on the signing of Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, which will pave the way for Matic to leave.

As Neville reckons Matic, 28, would be the perfect holding midfielder at Old Trafford as 35-year-old Michael Carrick can’t play week in, week out.

Neville told Sky Sports: “Michael Carrick has obviously got one more year but he can’t play every single week so they do need to have that player who can come in and do the same job.
“And Nemanja Matic would be able to do that. So I think United do need a holding midfield player.

“Morgan Schneiderlin was let go earlier in the season and Bastian Schweinsteiger didn’t get a game.

“So you’re talking about there needing to be a replacement for them and ultimately Matic would fit the bill.”
Matic played a key part in Chelsea’s road to the Premier League title last season, working well alongside N’Golo Kane in the centre of the park.

And Neville is surprised Antonio Conte wants to sell the towering Serbian, who previously worked with United manager Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge.

Neville added: “It’s a strange one for Chelsea to let him go because I thought he was really good for them with Kante.

“I think they need to strengthen, so I’m not sure why they’re letting him and they must have a replacement.”
