NEWCASTLE UNITED boss Rafa Benitez has admitted he is struggling to compete in this summer’s ‘crazy’ transfer market.
Newcastle earned promotion back to the Premier League last season, pipping Brighton to the Championship title by one point.
But despite returning to the top flight, the Toon are yet to bolster their ranks with any big-name signings.
The St James’ Park club have instead missed out on a number of targets, including Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham and experienced goalkeeper Willy Caballero.
And Rafa Benitez has admitted he is finding it difficult to compete with other clubs in this summer’s ‘crazy’ transfer market.
“It’s not easy for a lot of teams, because the market is a bit crazy. We have to try to do our best,” Benitez said.
“Obviously, the top sides have a lot of money.
“The other teams are spending some money, but we will see if we can do our job.”
Newcastle have so far brought in two players – making Christian Atsu’s move permanent and snapping up former Eibar defender Florian Lejeune.
And Benitez claimed he is not giving up hope on bringing more players through the door, but will ensure they are right for the squad.
“We know where we are,” the former Liverpool boss added.
“It’s not ideal, because everybody wants to see a lot of players signed already but we have to keep working and trying to find the players we want.
“Hopefully, we can do it.”
