PNC executives didn’t support my 2016 campaign – Edward Mahama fights back

The 2016 flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Dr Edward Nasigree Mahama has hit back at some executive members of his party over his recent appointment by President Akufo-Addo.

According to him, some top members of the PNC worked against him in the 2016 campaign resulting to his abysmal performance at the polls. Dr Mahama has received incessant attacks from his own party leaders after accepting a role as an Ambassador at Large under the NPP government. A move the PNC top members have unanimously condemn.

The General secretary of the PNC, Atik Mohammed in a radio interview recently announced that, top party hierarchy are fired up in holding emergency meeting in few days to determine Dr Mahama fate with the party.

On his part, a former flagbearer of the PNC, Hassan Ayariga has flayed Dr Mahama for the appointment, branding him as an ‘errand boy’ to President Akufo-Addo. Hassan Ayariga argues that, Dr Edward Mahama should have rejected the ambassadorial role without a second thought, since the portfolio is not even up to the level of a Presidential Aide.

But Dr Mahama has rejected their claims that he has sold the PNC to the NPP, insisting that, he personally briefed some leaders of the party on his new role. He also submitted that, he is personally not happy with the treatment handed him by the PNC top executives during the 2016 elections.

“During the campaign, I knew that some of them [executives] were not supporting me and the performance of the party in the election reflects that”, Dr Mahama said. He also maintained that, “Even Madam Charlotte Osei mentioned the problems that we had as a party.

If they are accusing me from their perspective, I have no problem with that, I’m a full blooded PNC. But I don’t live in the past, I’ve been given a charge by the President of Ghana and I’ll like to first thank God, thank him [president] and I hope I’ll work in this new role to the glory of God and to the satisfaction of President Akufo Addo”.
