David de Gea tells Jose Mourinho: I want to play for Real Madrid in my career

DAVID DE GEA has told Jose Mourinho he wants to play for Real Madrid at some point in his career if the opportunity came.

Real Madrid have been chasing De Gea since 2015 and saw a proposed move collapse on the final day of the summer transfer window.

But last season’s Champions League winners have not given up hope of trying to sign the Spain number one with president Florentino Perez determined to bring him to the Bernabeu.

A possible swap deal involving Alvaro Morata had been mooted but that now appears to be off the table after United signed Romelu Lukaku earlier this month.

Nevertheless, according to Yahoo Sport, Mourinho asked De Gea towards the end of last season if he wanted to join Madrid.

And De Gea reportedly told his manager that if the chance opened up during his career, he would like to play for them.

Yahoo Sport claim that response led Mourinho to adjust his transfer plans in case he needed to sign a new keeper.

But the outlet says United and Mourinho are now confident they have seen off the possibility of De Gea leaving until next summer at least.

Zinedine Zidane’s happiness with Keylor Navas is also mentioned as a reason why United believe Madrid are unlikely to push for De Gea.

This month, United have tied De Gea’s understudies Sergio Romero and Joel Pereira to long-term contracts.
