Huge government size doesn’t worry me

President Akufo-Addo has said he is not worried about the size of his government despite criticisms that having 110 Ministers and deputies will drain the coffers of the state.

“I’m not worried about the size of government because I think that first of all the overwhelming majority of people in the government are MPs, who are already on the public exchequer, I think something like two-thirds or three-fifths of the appointees are all MPs so that the incidence of they becoming Ministers [and a burden] on the exchequer is minimal,” the president told journalists at the Flagstaff House on Tuesday, 18 July.

Justifying the size of his government, the president said: “Secondly, the really important thing is your capacity to deliver. At the end of the four years, people will feel a significant improvement in their lives, more jobs are available, people are getting wages, the cost of living is something that is within the reach of all ordinary people. I don’t think they are going to worry themselves too much about the size of my government.

“My responsibility is to deliver that result and these are the methods that I’ve chosen to do it. If I succeed, the whole ballgame is mine, if I don’t the Ghanaian people will express themselves accordingly,” the president added.
