Huge gov’t size not an issue – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo Tuesday reiterated that he is not perturbed about the size of his government, despite scathing opposition.
According to critics, the president is simply dolling out jobs to loyalties when he should be protecting the public purse.
The founding president of IMANI Ghana Franklin Cudjoe for instance speaking on Morning Starr in March described the development as “senseless” and that it is “a very stubborn and disrespectful way of handling national affairs” with a prediction that it will lead to cronyism and corruption.

In his reaction, however, to a question in that regard during his maiden encounter with journalists at the presidency, Akufo-Addo said: “I’m not worried about the size of government because I think that first of all the overwhelming majority of people in the government are MPs, who are already on the public exchequer, I think something like two-thirds or three-fifths of the appointees are all MPs so that the incidence of they becoming Ministers [and a burden] on the exchequer is minimal.”
According to him, the focus should be on their capacity to deliver and that “at the end of the four years, people will feel a significant improvement in their lives, more jobs are available, people are getting wages, the cost of living is something that is within the reach of all ordinary people. I don’t think they are going to worry themselves too much about the size of my government.
“My responsibility is to deliver that result and these are the methods that I’ve chosen to do it. If I succeed, the whole ballgame is mine, if I don’t the Ghanaian people will express themselves accordingly.”
