Lapaz shooting: Kennedy Agyepong calls on IGP to arm all police officers

New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for the Assin Central constituency in the Central region has called on the Inspector General of Police to immediately arm all police officers in the country with guns to counter the threat of any attack.

Kennedy Agyepong’s comments follows a broad daylight robbery staged by two robbers that claimed the life of a police officer Daniel Owusu and the survived Djibril Alhassan who were on their motorbikes, on Thursday 13, at Abeka Lapaz.

Two armed men on motorbikes aimed and shot at two police officers close to Las Palmas restaurant at Lapaz at about 1 pm on Thursday.

Reports suggested that the robbers carried out the action to prevent the officers from thwarting their planned criminal act in the area.

They subsequently stole a vehicle and sped off towards Kasoa, leaving behind their motorbikes.

The legislator said the shooting was a “deliberate and cowardly attack” and called on his constituents to volunteer information to the police to help arrest the assailants.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Morning Show “Dwaso Nsem” Tuesday, the outspoken MP urged COP David Asante-Apeatu to evaluate holistically and ensure the safety needs of his officers.

“I am very saddened about the shooting incident that occurred at Lapaz last week. I want to urge the IGP to make sure that every police officer in the country carries a pistol to defend himself in such attacks” he noted.

Mr Kennedy Agyepong however accused some police officers in the country of conniving with land guards and criminals to terrorize Ghanaians.

He is of the conviction that some senior police officers, whom he refused to name, are backing some of these criminals and are openly terrorizing citizens.

He, therefore, called on the President and IGP, to immediately intervene and bring sanity to police service.
