Alvaro Morata has revealed Cesar Azpilicueta convinced him to join Chelsea as the Real Madrid striker closes in on a £67m move.
The Blues missed out on Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United but have moved quickly to land a replacement for Diego Costa, who has been frozen out of the first team by Antonio Conte.
The 24-year-old landed at Heathrow airport ahead of his medical with the Blues and explained Cesar Azpilicueta helped convince him to swap Madrid for London.
“It’s the best club,” Morata told Sky Sports News when asked why he chose Chelsea. “He [Conte] is one of the best coaches of the world and I’m so happy to work with Antonio.
“I don’t know [how close I came to joining Manchester United], the most important thing is I’m here and to play for Chelsea and I’m here to take the medical and I think everything is OK.
“It’s one of the best leagues of the world and I’m so happy to be here.
“I speak with Azpilicueta and he told me everything is OK.”
