Internal wrangling at EC not good – Asante

The chairman of the National Peace Council, Most Rev. Emmanuel Asante, has cautioned against actions that could mar the independence of the Electoral Commission.
His call follows a petition by some unknown staff of the Commission, demanding the removal of their chairperson Charlotte Osei, claiming she lacks the managerial skills needed to lead the commission.
Also, they alleged that she “single-handedly” gave out contracts to the tune of $21,999,592 without going through tender contrary to the Public Procurement Act. They also claim that the EC Boss has spent over 4 million Ghana cedis on her residence.
But Mrs. Osei in a statement described as “frivolous, baseless” the petition and actuated by “malice and ill will.”
“These allegations are in my view, the product of an overactive evil imagination, and do not deserve any serious attention,” she added.

Commenting on the development, Most Rev. Asante said the chaos engulfing the commission could spell doom for its independence.
He thus urged the warring parties to adopt arbitration to address “these internal problems.”
“I will caution that for the good of this country we need an Electoral Commission that is united. So whatever the problems are, we must find ways and means of addressing these kinds of issues,” he stated Friday July 21, 2017 in an interview with Accra-based Joy FM.
