IT SEEMS Jesse Lingard is already laying down the foundations for Antoine Griezmann to join Manchester United next season.
Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann was strongly linked with a move away from the Spanish capital this summer with Jose Mourinho chasing his signature.
However, after months of speculation the transfer saga finally came to an end when he signed a new contract with the Spanish giants in June.
Griezmann said at the time it would have been “dirty” of him to leave Atletico for United, as his club cannot sign a replacement this summer due to a FIFA-imposed transfer ban.
“I stayed mainly because of the ban. Atletico need me more than ever. It would be dirty to leave,” the Frenchman said.
“I wouldn’t have been myself or the person that I feel I am today, if I had left the club in that way.”
But Lingard is hoping a move could happen in the near future.
“The player I’d like to see in Manchester United next season? Antoine Griezmann,” he said.
“I hope it will happen.”
Griezmann remains under contract with Atletico until 2022.
Having decided against pursuing Griezmann, Mourinho went on to sign Romelu Lukaku in a £75m move from Everton.
The Portuguese boss still wants two more signings though, saying recently: “I’m happy with my squad but I would like to have two more players, I never hide that, one player a midfield player would give me more options to the balance and the team.”
