RENATO SANCHES has snubbed a move to Chelsea due to their capture of Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco.
France international Bakayoko was signed earlier in the summer for £39.7million.
Antonio Conte made signing the 22-year-old a priority as he looked to replace Nemanja Matic in the middle.
Chelsea have since sold Matic to Manchester United for £40m, with Bakayoko and N’Golo Kante set to form Chelsea’s midfield for the long-term future.
However, with Chelsea competing in the Champions League again this term, Conte wants to bolster his squad further and turned to Sanches in a bid to reinforce his midfield.
But the Blues appear to have lost out in the race to sign the 19-year-old Bayern ace.
According to the Mirror, Sanches fears Chelsea’s move for Bakayoko would see him trade the Bayern bench for the same situation at Stamford Bridge.
The Bundesliga giants are open to a loan exit for Sanches as he goes in search of game time to help his development.
But while Bakayoko is expected to miss the start of the season as he recovers from a knee injury, Sanches is not prepared for competition for places at Chelsea.
Instead, the Mirror add he prefers a move to AC Milan, meaning the Chelsea board will have to look elsewhere.
Reports, though, have suggested talks between Milan and Bayern over a deal have broken down due to the Italian club’s desire to have the option to buy Sanches at the end of the season.
Liverpool are now said to have joined the hunt, with claims in Germany outlining Jurgen Klopp wants Sanches if Philippe Coutinho leaves for Barcelona.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are also interested in Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Leicester’s Danny Drinkwater as options in midfield.
