NEMANJA MATIC can be Manchester United’s Claude Makelele, according to former midfielder Quinton Fortune.
Nemanja Matic joined Manchester United this week from Chelsea in a deal worth £40million, agreeing a three-year contract.
Some have questioned the transfer fee, suggesting it is too much for the 29-year-old Serbia international.
However, former United midfielder Quinton Fortune believes it is a shrewd signing by Jose Mourinho.
And he thinks Matic could become a key player at the heart of the Red Devils’ midfield, much like Chelsea legend Claude Makalele.
“He’s a very good player, knows the Premier League and obviously the manager knows him so he is someone who can fill in for Michael Carrick,” Fortune said.
“He’s a fantastic addition to the team and I’m really looking forward to someone who can screen in front of the back four.
“He plays the role perfectly, like a Claude Makelele role, and, at the same time, can play as well.
“He is a really, really strong player who strengthens the squad and gives us a better chance of winning the league this season.
Manchester United take on Sampdoria tonight (7.45pm) in a pre-season clash and Matic could be handed his first run-out.
And Fortune admitted he cannot wait to see what the former Chelsea man can bring to the table.
“I am excited to see if he’s involved tonight and to see how he does,” he added.
