Thank Mahama for 'last-minute' Auditor-General appointment – Ace Ankomah

Private legal practitioner, Ace Ankomah has lauded the Auditor-General for activating a dormant mandate of the Department, by surcharging four people for misusing state funds.
He said the A-G, whose last-minute appointment in 2016 was greeted with criticisms, has proven to be an exceptional Auditor.
The OccupyGhana member said he had expected to have a “fight” with Mr Domelevo but he was wrong.

He told Kojo Yankson on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Wednesday, his perception about the A-G changed following a meeting he had with him shortly after he took office.

Mr Ankomah said at that meeting, Mr Domelevo told him “we are on the same side” in their quest for strict observance of Ghana’s audit law.

Doling out praise in a rare fashion, the legal practitioner said former President John Mahama deserves special commendation for “bringing this man to Ghana.”

Prior to his appointment as the head of the Auditor-General’s Department on December 23, 2016, Mr Domelevo was a Senior Financial Management Specialist with the World Bank.

The accountant reportedly declined the initial offer, but he dismissed that, saying he went to consult his former employers over the appointment.

His appointment was part of the last-minute decisions former President Mahama made before handing-over. Some civil society groups and political opponents criticized the move, saying it would be injurious to the country’s governance.

But seven months after his swearing in, Mr Ankomah said he misjudged the A-G and has urged Ghanaians to thank the former President for the appointment.

The lawyer said Mr Domelevo took Ghana’s Audit Service Act, 2000 (Act 584), part of which have not been implemented for the last 25 years, to Zambia. He revealed the Southern African country with haste, adopted and passed auditing guidelines into law.
