I’ll fight and quit NPP if Towing levy is implemented – Abronye DC

Activist and National Youth Organizer aspirant of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Kwame Baffoe aka Abronye DC has vowed to marshal all he can to resist the implementation of the controversial towing levy, even if it will cost him his membership of the NPP.

According to him, it’s unintelligible that the NPP will want to implement such an unpopular policy which contract was signed in 2014 by the ruling NDC party but failed to implement the policy when it was in power.

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Roads and Transport has approved the implementation of the controversial mandatory towing levy to be imposed on vehicle owners inspite huge public disagreement.

The law which was to come into force on July 1, 2017, was suspended in June to enable the Transport Ministry to hold stakeholders engagements, following the massive backlash it received.

The committee in its report noted that after a detailed study of the proposal presented by the National Road Safety Commission and the Transport Ministry, it holds the view that the initiative is in the country’s interest considering the high accident rate.

“The committee furnished with necessary information from various stakeholders and having addressed their concerns as provided in its recommendation, recommends the early implementation of section 102 of the road traffic regulations 2012 (Li 20180),” the committee’s report read in part.

Fees per year for both commercial and non-commercial vehicles, depending on tonnage, range from ?20 to ? 200.

But speaking to Fiifi Banson on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa FM Friday, Abronye warned the Akufo Addo administration not to implement such a wicked policy that will attract the wrath of the driving public and cause the government bad publicity.

He dismissed suggestions that the government’s refusal to implement the policy will cause huge judgment debt against the state.

“Where does the issue of judgment debt come up in this matter? This policy will be resisted any day, the businessman who stands to benefit hugely when this policy is implement already owes Ghana. There was about GHC 50million over payment of the Youth in Sanitation module as captured in the GYEEDA report. Has he been able to pay back?

“If the NPP government goes ahead to implement this plain thievery policy, I’ll quit the NPP. I haven’t received any prophesy that I’ll go to heaven once I remain a member of the NPP till I die.”
