Togo ‘uprising’ too close for comfort – Kwesi Pratt warns Ghana

Managing Editor for the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, says Ghana is likely to be affected by the ongoing demonstrations against the Gnassingbe family dynasty in Togo.

President Faure Gnassingbe has been in power in the West African country since the death in 2005 of his father, Gnassingbe Eyadema, who had been in control for 38 years.

Protesters on Saturday took to the streets of Togo to demonstrate against the rule, resulting in the death of about three persons.

Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. explained that trade between Ghana, Nigeria and Benin will be severely affected since traders from Ghana pass through Togo in order to get to Nigeria.

He added that Ghanaian businesses will be affected which will go a long way to affect Ghana’s economy at large hence the need for Ghana to mediate in the unrest.

Kwesi Pratt also noted that armed robbery as well as the springing of rebel groups in the country will be on the rise if the unrest is left to escalate.

He called on Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to consider finding ways of settling the unrest in Togo amicably instead of allowing the situation to explode.
