GIS ordered to grant Indian businessman residence permit

An Accra High Court has ordered the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) to grant Indian businessman Ashok Kumar Sivaram a temporary residence permit.
The court presided over by Justice Naa Adele Azu further instructed that the directive should be carried out while the GIS pursue what it has identified as legal infractions by Mr. Sivaram.
The court further asked the applicant to appear before the GIS Tuesday August 29, 2017 for the process to be finalized.

The order followed contradictions by the Controller General of the GIS and the representative of the Attorney General’s office on whether Mr. Sivram appeared before the GIS.
An Accra High Court presided over by Justice Kwaku Ackaah Boafo on 31st July, 2017, declared as illegal and an abuse of discretionary power the deportation of Mr. Sivaram by the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery.
Owing to the declaration by the judge, the Indian Businessman returned to the country on August 2, 2017 only for him to be detained by the Immigration Service on claims that he had no visa.
Justice Boafo ordered for the release of the Indian businessman, who had been in detention at the Airport for two days.
The judge, however, ordered his passport be retained by the Ghana Immigration Service.
