REAL MADRID accepted a bid for Gareth Bale from Manchester United but the star rejected a move to Old Trafford, reports claim.
Manchester United spent the summer attempting to land Gareth Bale, who has been a long-term target for previous managers Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.
But Spanish outlet Don Balon claims the Red Devils were closer to landing the Wales international under Jose Mourinho.
The shock report says United actually had a £92million bid accepted by Florentino Perez.
However, once informed of Perez’s decision, Bale snubbed a move to Manchester United because he deems it a risky project.
Mourinho’s side are currently top of the Premier League, winning their first three league games against West Ham, Swansea and Leicester.
Optimism is building around United as a result with Mourinho himself a far cry from the grumpy and subdued figure he often cut last season.
But Don Balon says Bale is still unconvinced.
Next May will mark five years since their last title triumph, with the club failing to land the prize since Ferguson’s retirement.
Real, contrastingly, are the world’s best team by quite some distance.
Zinedine Zidane’s side have won the Champions League twice in as many years and also scooped La Liga last term.
And it seems Bale deemed a move back to England as a step down.
Additionally, Real also planned on replacing the 28-year-old with Kylian Mbappe.
But the 18-year-old ended up swapping Monaco for Ligue 1 rivals Paris Saint-Germain instead.
