LIVERPOOL can challenge for the Premier League title after they kept Philippe Coutinho away from Barcelona, says Ryan Giggs.
Barcelona had three bids turned down for Coutinho during the summer, with the Brazilian even handing in a transfer request to force through a move.
But Liverpool stood firm and refused to sell the 25-year-old playmaker – and Giggs reckons keeping him will be a huge boost to their title hopes.
Giggs was also impressed by the incomings at Anfield, having previously been sceptical of Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
Liverpool broke their transfer record to bring in Mohamed Salah from Roma in a £37million deal and spent just short of £100m on new recruits.
“I didn’t fancy Liverpool before the season started,” said Giggs, who won 13 Premier League titles during his time at Liverpool’s fierce rivals Manchester United.
“But they’ve made some decent buys and kept [Philippe] Coutinho which is a boost for them.
“To win the league you need a top goalkeeper and you wonder have they got that? That would be the only question.
“But after the business they’ve done I’ve probably changed my mind a little bit and they will be in the mix.”
Liverpool currently sit second in the Premier League table thanks to their undefeated start to the season, drawing their opening fixture and winning the following two games.
Klopp’s side, who thrashed Arsenal 4-0 last time out, take on Manchester City at the Etihad next up on Saturday (12.30pm).
