The Economic and Organized Crimes Office (EOCO) is set to prosecute public and civil servants engaged in corrupt acts.
This follows pressure mounted on it by the citizenry lead by Adom FM’s morning show, Captain Kwadwo Smart on May 19th, 2017.
He led a demonstration dubbed: ‘Y?’gye y? sika‘ and presented a petition to EOCO and demanded some implicated state officials in the Auditor General’s report by investigated.
The protest was attended by tens of thousands of listeners, mainly youth who are appalled about the high incidents of corruption in the country.
The Fabewoso segment on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem focuses on unearthing corrupt activities among various government institutions. Perpetrators of the corrupt acts are named and shamed as well.
Among the 310 documents presented to EOCO officials over the financial irregularities, was one about an appointee under former President John Kufuor’s administration.
Captain Smart said the nation’s debt totaling GHS127.1 billion would not have accumulated if the money was not stolen by some of the former government appointees.
He said the embezzled money cited in the 310 documents that were submitted to EOCO should be in the region of $1.2 billion. This, he said is enough to pay the country’s outstanding debt.
Five months after the demonstration, it has emerged the EOCO has concluded its investigations and is ready to prosecute those found culpable.
The investigative body according to Captain Smart has retrieved about GHC13 billion from those found culpable.
Also, officials at Gomoa East District Assembly who allegedly used GHC82 thousand for the funeral of former District Chief Executive, he noted are likely to face prosecution.
Captain Smart revealed that, their dockets are ready for prosecution.
