Jose Mourinho reveals why he left Real Madrid ‘unhappy’ and makes cryptic Barcelona claim

JOSE MOURINHO has claimed he left Real Madrid because he was unhappy at the Bernabeu and suggested talk of a move to Barcelona in 2008 was true.

Jose Mourinho left Real Madrid in 2013 after three mediocre seasons in charge at the Bernabeu to return to Chelsea.

Despite winning the 2011/12 La Liga title, Real largely played second fiddle to Barcelona during Mourinho’s tenure.

And the 54-year-old has revealed personal reasons were a huge factor in him leaving the Spanish capital where he had grown unhappy.

“It was my decision, my daughter wanted to stay at the University of London and I thought it was the right moment to leave,” Mourinho told French TV station telefoot.

“It was an important moment for my family.

“There are also professional reasons behind my decision. I reach the best results when I am happy and I was not happy in Madrid anymore.

“I wasn’t happy in my third year there.”

Prior to his move to Real, Mourinho was rumoured to be weighing up a job with their La Liga rivals Barcelona in 2008.

He eventually ended up joining Inter Milan, winning the treble in the 2009/10 season, however, he has hinted there was truth in the Barca rumours.

When quizzed about the move to the Nou Camp, Mourinho added: “Maybe I will reveal the truth one day.

“There is something about my career that I want to keep secret.

“I will tell the truth when I will be really, really, really old.”
