Man Utd news: Atletico Madrid to convince Ander Herrera to quit Old Trafford

ATLETICO MADRID believe they can convince Ander Herrera to leave Manchester United for the Wanda Metropolitano this summer, according to reports in Spain.

Atletico Madrid have long been admirers of Ander Herrera and are said to have renewed their interest in the midfielder.

Spanish newspaper AS Diario claim the 28-year-old is one of Diego Simeone’s top transfer targets for the summer.

It is said once Diego Costa and Vitolo’s deals are finalised in January, all the club’s efforts will go into pursuing Herrera.

And the Spain international could be available on a free transfer, providing he does not agree a new deal with the Red Devils.

Herrera is approaching the final six months of his contract, meaning he will be free to speak to foreign clubs in the New Year.

And he could be tempted by a move to Atletico, especially if Paul Pogba’s return from injury results in him returning to the bench.

He has started just five Premier League games this term as Jose Mourinho has favoured a paring of Pogba and new signing Nemanja Matic.

And if things do not improve a return to Spain could be on the cards, having previously played for Real Zaragoza and Athletic Bilbao.

Speaking about his lack of game time earlier this year, Herrera said: “My first two seasons here I played 71 games, so it’s not a bad number of games.

“But, of course, I cannot lie, this is the time I am enjoying most at Manchester United.

“The manager had a conversation and he told me I was going to be an important player if I do what he wanted me to do.

“I am always open to learning. I am always open to adapting myself to a new role and a new position. It is not so easy to play for Manchester United.”
