Marc Wilmots leaves Ivory Coast coaching job

Ivory Coast coach Marc Wilmots has left his job “by mutual agreement” after failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
The former Belgium international, who won 70 caps, had only been in role six months but pays the price for his failure to guide the Elephants to a fourth successive World Cup.
Ivory Coast missed out on qualifying for Russia following a surprise 2-0 defeat home at the hands of Morocco. The result was enough to seal the North Africans a spot in Russia for the first time since 1998.

A statement from the Ivorian Football Federation said the two sides had met on Monday and agreed to the split.

In a statement on social media, Wilmots thanked the fans, players and members of the Federation for their efforts under him.

Wilmots joined Ivory Coast after being fired by the Belgian Federation for suffering a quarter-final exit with Belgium at Euro 2016.

As Ivory Coast boss, he won just game in the world cup qualifiers, losing 4 and managing a draw.
