Theresa May warned she faces a MASSIVE REBELLION if £36 billion divorce bill goes through

THERESA May is facing a massive rebellion and resignations from her government if she tries to push through a Brexit deal with a £36 billion divorce bill.
The angry backlash against a massive divorce bill was fueled by European Commission’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier yesterday, who said Britain could have no access to single market benefits and British banks could not have any passporting rights.

The insult to Britain came as the Prime Minister chaired a meeting of her Brexit “war cabinet” to discuss increasing the offer to the EU with pro-Remain Chancellor Philip Hammond said to be pushing for a £36 billion divorce bill.

Mr Barnier’s words has strengthened that hand of pro-Brexit MPs who argue that there is no point in trying to get a deal with the EU.

Last night senior Tory MPs were lining up to warn Mrs May that she needs to quit the talks and prepare for World Trade Organisation rules which will hurt the EU more than Britain and mean Brussels “will not get a penny” from Britain.
Speaking to the Centre for European Reform conference in Brussels, Mr Barnier said that UK-based financial services companies may be able to operate in the EU post-Brexit on the basis of “equivalent” regulations, they will “lose their European passport” and any future agreements will be subject to the proviso that Brussels will “never compromise on financial stability”.

He later added that Britain’s refusal to accept free movement meant it would have “no single market benefits”.

His aggressive stance undermined his earlier claim that he wanted to give the UK “the most ambitious free trade deal” in EU history.

And in a final insult he said that there will be “no ambitious partnership without common ground on fair competition.
“Stated: Tax-dumping, food safety, social and environmental standards.”

Tory MP Jacob Rees Mogg said: “No other country that trades with the EU has to follow the same tax and social structures.

“Mr Barnier seems to forget that we are leaving the EU and its dead hand will no longer hang cadaverously over us.“

Meanwhile, a minister also told the Daily Express that Mrs May will face resignations from the Government if she tries to present a deal involving a £36 billion with a trade deal the same as the one agreed between the EU and Canada, which Mr Barnier appeared indicate Britain would get.
The member of the Government said that the views were shared by Leave supporters across the Government with the pro-Brexit European Reform Group (ERG) holding a number of key positions.

The MP branded the negotiations “stupid” and said British negotiators need to be clear that “any divorce bill is tied to a trade deal” not described as “obligations”.

The minister went on: “If all the EU is offering is the same as Canada then it will make no sense to pay anything for that.

“Canada didn’t pay anything for its trade deal so why should Britain and that’s before you talk about £20 billion or £36 billion.”
Senior Tory backbenchers also made it clear they will not agree to a massive payment to the EU particularly if there is no special trade deal.

Addressing the ‘Deal or No Deal: What are the options?’ conference in Westminster today, former Brexit minister David Jones will call on the Government to quit the talks in December.

He will say: “We should also be making serious preparations for life outside the EU by investing in the personnel, infrastructure and IT needed to commence trading with the EU on World Trade Organisation terms.

“Putting those arrangements in place will have the doubly beneficial effect of providing reassurance to business and signalling to the EU that we are not disposed to be strung along.”
Meanwhile, reacting to Mr Barnier’s speech, Tory MP Peter Bone said: “Mr Barnier if the EU is trying to blackmail us for a divorce bill there needs to be something on the other side.

“Instead, Mr Barnier has confirmed what we all knew that there is no point in dealing with these people.

“We should leave and have a clean Brexit on WTO rules, making our own rules and controlling our own borders and not pay them a penny.

“When they are ready and realise they are worse off they can come and ask us for a free trade deal.”
Ahead of her meeting, former minister Robert Halfon warned the Prime Minister that the public “will go bananas” if she offers Brussels £36 billion or more.

Meanwhile, Leave campaigner and senior Tory MP Nigel Evans said that Britain “should not play Santa Claus” to the profligate EU.

Pro-Brexit Tory backbencher Henry Smith said: “As Germany struggles to form a government, now is not the time for Britain to offer more money than her obligations are due in EU Brexit negotiations.

“The EU27 will of course miss UK cash but no deal would damage their economies and trade surplus with us far worse.”

Last night a Downing Street spokesman made it clear that despite Mr Barnier’s comments, the Government will push to protect the City’s interests.
“These are all points which have been made before.

“In terms of the City, the Chancellor has been absolutely clear the City is of vital importance to the UK and Europe in general and having a strong City is in the interests of the EU as well as of Britain.

He said: “On cherry picking – we have always said that what we are seeking is a deep and special partnership with the EU.

“We believe we are uniquely placed to seek that given that we are coming from a position of alignment in regulatory terms and that we are confident of achieving a deal that works for us and for the EU.”

The ministers who make up the “Brexit war cabinet” that are: Mrs May, Mr Hammond, First Secretary of State Damian Green, Home Secretary Amber Rudd, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, Brexit Secretary David Davis, International Trade Secretary Liam Fox, Business Secretary Greg Clark, Environment Secretary Michael Gove and Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson.
