Lionel Messi: Barcelona team-mate makes big contract claim

LIONEL MESSI’s contract situation is not a problem in the Barcelona dressing room, insists Denis Suarez.

Messi’s deal runs out in the summer despite the club insisting he has agreed a new one.

It was announced he’d signed a new contract in the summer before emerging he in fact hadn’t.

He has been linked with a move to Manchester City – to be reunited with Pep Guardiola – and can talk to other clubs from January.

But Barcelona and the players remain calm on the subject.

Denis believes Messi will be around for years to come and insists no one fears he will leave.

“With respect to [Messi’s] contract renewal, I think he will be here for a long time yet,” Denis.

“With respect to [Messi’s] contract renewal, I think he will be here for a long time yet,” Denis.

“On Friday, he will be at training and on Sunday he will play against Valencia.

“There’s calm because Barca is the club of Leo’s life.

“We hope he stays here for a long time and that we can keep on enjoying him.”

Messi, 30, was on the bench on Wednesday night in the Champions League for the game with Juventus.

He was being rested ahead of this weekend’s top of the table clash with Valencia.

Barcelona lead Valencia by four points after 12 games while Real Madrid are down in third 10 points behind Barca.

And Denis insists Valencia are now the biggest challengers for La Liga.

“The team to fear most is Valencia because they’re our next opponent and because they’re just four points behind us, but there’s still a long way to go,” he said.

“We’re not even in January yet. Anything can happen. Even if we win at Mestalla, La Liga won’t be won.”
