Stop complaining about Kumawood and make it better – Shirley Frimpong-Manso

Ghanaian movie director, Shirley Frimpong-Manso has hit back at critics of the popular Kumawood movies urging them to rather channel out their efforts to make it better.

The graduate from the National Film and Television Institute of Ghana said her colleague stakeholders in the same industry are doing very well.

“I’m a Ghanaian and I like to be called a Ghanaian Director. I love Kumawood but I’m not into or subscribe to the naming of our movie industry as Ghallywood or Kumawood. I do love what they do and don’t care what anybody says. The thing is they are doing something, for want of nothing, they’re doing something and people actually enjoy it. So Instead of complaining about it how about we support it and make it better,” Shirley Frimpong-Manso told Bola Ray on Starr Chat.
Kumasi, located in Ghana’s mineral-rich Ashanti region is renowned for its home video production called KUMAWOOD.

It’s particularity: the movies are done in the local language, thus the locals are able to relate more to them.

Shirley Frimpong-Manso raised the standard of film production in Ghana and Africa by telling progressive African stories as seen through the eyes of Africans.

Her films are also known for their “fierce female leads, as they portray African women with agency who can be breadwinners and lead complex lives.
