ARSENAL’S invincible Robert Pires says the Manchester derby bust-up at the weekend reminded him of the famous Old Trafford ‘Pizzagate’.
Manchester United lost 2-1 at home to rivals Manchester City on Sunday and the visitors’ ‘over-celebrating’ caused a confrontation in the dressing rooms.
Jose Mourinho was apparently drowned in milk and water, while City assistant coach Mikel Arteta was left with a bloodied face.
But the clash was not the first, and probably will not be the last, which has graced United’s dressing rooms.
In 2004 the Red Devils ended Arsenal’s 49-match unbeaten run with a 2-0 win and things got heated in the tunnel area.
Cesc Fabregas, now of Chelsea, launched a slice of pizza which hit Sir Alex Ferguson – which Pires recalls.
“After the pizza, it’s the milk,” Pires told Marca.
“That was a bad memory because we lost to Manchester United.
“I don’t know what happened in the tunnel but I heard Cesc Fabregas admitted to throwing the pizza.
“Sometimes players are nervous because they lost the game and make trouble in the tunnel or with the opposition, and the tension is very high.”
United will be hoping to put the incident behind them when they travel to West Brom on Sunday (2.15pm).
