Manchester City set Premier League goalscoring record

Manchester City have become the first ever team to score 100 Premier League goals in a single year after beating Bournemouth 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

Two goals from Sergio Aguero and a strike from Raheem Sterling took City to the 100-goal milestone before Danilo added another five minutes from time.

Pep Guardiola’s side still have two more league games remaining in 2017, as they face Newcastle United away on Wednesday and then travel to Crystal Palace on New Year’s Eve.

City became the first side in 35 years to score 100 goals in a single calendar year, with Liverpool reaching that landmark in 1982 when the Reds performed a miraculous comeback to go from being midtable at Christmas in 1981 to lift the First Division trophy under Bob Paisley.

Joe Fagan took charge for the 1982-83 season, and a strong start to the campaign set them up nicely to retain the title.

The 4-0 win also meant Guardiola’s side have now won 17 Premier League games in a row, bettering his record at Barcelona where he won 16 consecutive La Liga games, but is still two short of the personal best recorded with Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga when he managed the Bavarian giants to 19 league wins between October 2013 and March 2014.

Over a fifth of City’s goals in 2017 came from one outlet, with Argentina international Sergio Aguero netting 22 times in the league. Gabriel Jesus has had a fantastic start to his career in the Premier League, scoring 15 times, while Raheem Sterling bagged 14 goals during the year.

Three of the Citizens’ 101 goals were own goals, while Danilo’s late finish against Bournemouth was his first for the club since his £26.5 million transfer from Real Madrid in July.
