George Weah The President – La-Bawaleshie Monday Star

My legend now a President! A journey that begun with one vision to use football as a tool to give back to society. Many will recall his outstanding contribution to African and World Football. He always sets the records amidst all “Odds” and immeasurable inspiration to young sports men and women in the world. Yes ! He became the first and still the only African Footballer winning the FIFA World Player of the Year 1995, Ballon d’Or , the Onze d’Or and several individual awards. His story is just simple – “Getting to the top in hard times” remarks you jokingly made at La-Bawaleshie during one of “Monday Stars” games years ago to the young boys who came to you. Well, as always, I appear also at the right moment for great things. Can’t forget that remarkable goal you scored on that “hard surface” pitch at La-Bawaleshie which caused most fans to gasp at the same time excited coupled with striking applause.

Now a President! A lifelong struggle and perseverance defying perceived “social standards”, entered into a new environment “Politics” just outside the sports fraternity and equally delivered. Always the first in everything, certainly that has written your name in “Gold” in the History Books in the world as – the “First Footballer who became President”. I think by now my Former Headmaster Mr. Nkansah will take back his words!

Many will sing praise, others may visit your Presidential Palace, more phone calls, more honors but one thing your fans will still hope you never forget amidst this greatest Power in your life; is that same humility and passion to give back to society. Yes! Giving Back! That got you there and will certainly carry you through. If that cold icy weather did not break you, that racial attacks did not get to you, that fall or loss in your first attempt didn’t deter you, what more can we say than to believe, work hard and remain focused in that same promises you made to the people.

You already know the though and hard choices you made, yes! still remain resolute to the calling. Mr. President – elect! Right! or Your Excellency George Weah!

Still wish to see your display in one National Holiday game. Best Regards
