Manchester United make bid for Alexis Sanchez

Manchester United have made a bid for Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez, according to a story in the Guardian.

United have offered £25m for Sanchez, and also given Arsenal the chance to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan as his replacement. There is some difficulty with the Armenian swapping clubs, as he is on £200,000 a week at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho’s club has offered Sanchez even higher wages on offer from Manchester City, thought to be around £290,000, with personal terms already agreed between Sanchez and City. The United manager is confident of securing a deal between United and Arsenal.

Despite Mourinho and Wenger’s relationship, United might have an advantage after City have chased Sanchez throughout the season despite a closed transfer window, and Mourinho does not believe that Pep Guardiola’s relationship with Sanchez from their time together at Barcelona.

United have been regularly linked with a move for Sanchez, but City were always regarded as the favourites for his signature. Following Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s serious knee injury, it has become clear that United require another striker, as Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have not been consistent performers through the middle.

Sanchez has been cutting a figure of a man sick of existence at The Emirates, and it is reported that Arsenal’s own squad want rid of him so as to get rid of a distraction in their attempt to qualify for the Champions League after missing last season. United have also been expected to make a move for Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil, though signing him on a free transfer was always the most likely option, regardless of whether the Sanchez transfer goes through.

While United need a player like Ozil much more than they do a player like Sanchez, if the deal went through it would be very funny, and mark a return to form for Mourinho’s sh*t-stirring.
