Romelu Lukaku considering legal action over “voodoo” claims

Today in stupid man says stupid thing, a religious special. Speaking at Everton’s AGM, majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri told the assembled throng that Romelu Lukaku had rejected a new, better deal at Goodison Park because:

he was on a pilgrimage in Africa or somewhere and he had a voodoo and he got the message that he needs to go to Chelsea.

Obviously, he didn’t go to Chelsea in the summer; he went to Manchester United. Equally obviously, Lukaku — a Roman Catholic — was none to happy to wake up this morning to headlines like “Voodoo message caused Romelu Lukaku to leave Everton” and “Romelu Lukaku refused Everton contract offer because a witch doctor advised him to join Chelsea”. And so:

Bit of advice, Mr Moshiri, if you’re reading: claiming that somebody has been seeking the advice of voodoo practitioners is … well, it’s not a great look. Because if it turns out that he hasn’t, as seems to be the case here, then people will start to wonder what about Romelu Lukaku could possibly have led you to decide that this would be a convincing lie, or a good joke, or whatever you were actually going for. And they’ll think to themselves: oh yeah. You berk.
