MANCHESTER UNITED target Alexis Sanchez could reportedly follow in Cristiano Ronaldo’s footsteps by donning the No 7 shirt at Old Trafford.
The Arsenal contract rebel is expected to leave the Emirates this month after refusing to put pen to paper on a new deal.
And he had been tipped to join Manchester City and secure a reunion with his old Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola in the process.
United entered the race to secure Sanchez’s signature last week though and they are now favourites to get him on-board.
The latest reports coming out of the 29-year-old’s homeland suggest the Red Devils have a trick up their sleeve as they try to snap him up.
According to Chilean newspaper El Mercurio, United have offered Sanchez the No 7 shirt.
The forward has worn that particular number during his stints at Udinese and Arsenal.
And he’d follow in the footsteps of a host of big names if he took the shirt on.
Ronaldo is joined on the list by fellow club legends David Beckham and George Best.
However, the players that have worn the No 7 shirt since Ronaldo’s 2009 departure haven’t faired too well in it.
They are Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia (now No 25), Angel Di Maria and Memphis Depay.
United are thought to be willing to let Henrikh Mkhitaryan join Arsenal as part of a deal for Sanchez.
The Armenian is against the idea of that switch though and the Gunners would rather sign Anthony Martial.
