SIR ALEX FERGUSON was interested in signing Alexis Sanchez back when he was in charge of Manchester United.
The legendary boss ran the rule over Sanchez while he was at Udinese.
But the forward ended up at Barcelona after Manchester United signed Ashley Young.
But Sir Alex admits he was keen on Sanchez and his Chile team-mate Marcelo Salas.
In 2010, he said: “We have looked at Sanchez and he has impressed us, as have other players. He has had very good games and is an interesting project.
“We have gathered some background, as with other footballers at his level, but nothing more than this for the moment.
“We have watched some Chileans in the past. The most interesting case was that of Salas, who had a brilliant World Cup [at France ’98] but he was at Lazio.
“We would have liked to have had him.”
But Sanchez is finally set for Old Trafford after agreeing terms on a four and a half year deal.
He will join in a swap deal from Arsenal with Henrik Mkhitaryan going the other way.
