Six mourners including two children and a pregnant woman have died in a boat accident on the Volta Lake at Affram Plains North District of the Eastern Region.
The accident occurred on Saturday at about 5pm.
The outboard motor canoe which had nine passengers on board, all mourners returning to the Bumbe Community after attending a funeral at Foekope encountered a strong windstorm on the lake which caused the boat to capsize killing six of the passengers but the others managed to swim to safety.
All six deceased persons have been identified as Victoria Akoto, 69, Rebecca Same, 46, Vena Akpaglo, 42, a pregnant woman, Patience Afete, 28, Kekeli Akpaglo , 2 , and Stanley Dakatsey a 1-year-old.
An assembly member in Yaovi Veji, who was a witness told Starr News that “they were from Bumbe and went to a funeral at Feorkope and upon return, they met a rainstorm and the boat capsized, six died all females. They were without life jacket. We were on the Dwarf Island returning as well so we came to meet the accident.”
Awini David, a health official at the Donkorkrom Presbyterian Hospital told Starr News that the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue of the hospital while one of the survivors reported at the facility has been treated and discharged.
