Bayern Munich chief issues transfer warning to Premier League clubs

PREMIER LEAGUE clubs should dial down their approach when signing young players to their academies.
That’s according to Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who says that the way English clubs deal with youngsters is ‘alarming’.

Players in England are often at professional clubs from a very young age.

Only a very small percentage ever progress to the first team, with a large number falling completely out of the professional game.

And Rummenigge says English clubs need to be careful when approaching potential star players.

Rummenigge told GQ: “I have noticed that English clubs, in particular, are already scouting 10 and 12-year-olds and convincing them to sign by handing a lot of money to their parents. That is alarming.
“We are ready to compete, but not at all costs. We are scouting a lot more aggressively and are also prepared to spend a lot more money than we used to.

“But we are always faced with the question: when do you reach the point when you must take a step back, even though the whole world is searching for the next Messi?”

A number of players have tried to force moves through in recent times.

Riyad Mahrez handed in a transfer request as he failed in his attempt to move from Leicester City to Man City in January.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was dropped from Borussia Dortmund’s squad in January as he ensured he got his move to Arsenal.

But Rummenigge says players should listen to their coaches and take on board what they say.

Rummenigge added: “Players have to respect the club, its management and, above all, the coach.

“I would never threaten a player with banning him to the grandstand, that only wipes out an asset. Assets perform on the pitch and don’t sit in the stands.”
