MANCHESTER UNITED boss Jose Mourinho has reportedly told Juan Mata and Ander Herrera that they can leave Old Trafford if they want.
In January, Mata signed a one-year extension with Manchester United to prevent him leaving this summer on a free transfer.
It had been reported United also triggered a clause to extend Herrera’s contract but the agreement was not confirmed by the club.
This season, both players have been regulars in Mourinho’s team selections without fully nailing down a place in the starting XI.
But with this summer set to see high profile arrivals, Mata and Herrera could see the exit door.
According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Mourinho has decided to let Mata and Herrera sort their own futures.
It is claimed Mourinho won’t put the duo on the transfer list but is prepared to let them go if they wish.
The report says Mourinho has told the United hierarchy that strengthening the defence and midfield is the priority.
Attacking additions are unlikely following the signing of Alexis Sanchez in January.
Mourinho launched a blistering attack on his players following their win over Brighton on Saturday, accusing them of lacking the personality required to play for United.
He said: “A few other guys, I saw them scared to play. I cannot say much more. It is a relation with personality, is a relation to trust, is a relation to class.
“When the sun is shining and everything goes well, you win matches, you score goals, everything goes in your direction, every player is a good player and wants to play and wants the ball and looks amazing and is confident.
“When it is dark and cold, and in football that means a period of bad results or a bad result, not everybody has the confidence and personality to play really.
“To be on the pitch and touch the ball every five minutes, everyone can do it, but to be on the pitch and say ‘give me the ball because I want to play’, not everyone can do that.”
