Policeman Seizes Over 50 Unlicensed Motorbikes at Opkonglo alone

Some motorists and pedestrians who ply on the Madina – Accra road described the most radical action taken by one Police Officer whose name withheld due to security reasons as he seized unlicensed motorcycles at Okponglo traffic lights.

The Police Officer, begun the one man “vigilante” operation between the hours of 7am to about 9am Friday 23 March 2018 at the Okponglo traffic light as pedestrians stood in awe as the operations went on uninterrupted.

Speaking to an observer who mentioned his as
Mr. Obrempong ,described the scene.
“ I stood there like 15mins when all of the sudden the Policeman stopped two cyclists and all he did was to raise him hand at them at the bike runway few meters to the Okponglo traffic lights. He then checks whether motorcyclist have helmet and subsequently ask for their license” he said.

He expressed his excitement, commended the Policeman and urged such operations needed a team effort and not one person.



“Seeing him stop the cyclist was such courage. I was excited for seeing him take that initiative but should be supported” he said.

Ghanadailies.com correspondent confirmed that about 50 motorcycles were ceased with offenses such as : bikers without license while others were without helmet as well as over-speeding.

In interview with one of the arrested bikers, he explained that when the Police asked him to stop he had no choice per mob around the traffic area alarmed him. He added that it appeared the Policeman had spiritual powers as he expressed in local language(Twi).

Meanwhile, there has been an increasing commercial motorcycles, popularly known in Ghana as “Okada” a term which originated from Nigeria. This growing commercial transport medium had open up a debate to regulate their operations.
